“My father never had money, and it’s always been obvious…”

“Obvious? To whom? Not you, or you wouldn’t have let him bankroll your college, now would you?” Nick was not going to let Delilah judge Hank just because the man drove a beat-up pickup and ate baloney sandwiches. While the bar owner might not be rich, he certainly wasn’t living paycheck to paycheck, not even close. “I’ve been in this town long enough to realize those with money aren’t flashing hundred-dollar bills at the diner.”

A huff and a scowl followed by “I know that. And I never knew about my father’s financial situation because he told me we were fine, that there was an insurance policy from my mother’s death, and that covered college and the other things he bought me.” Her gaze narrowed. “Are you saying it wasn’t the truth? That he lied to me?”

The worry and disbelief on her face pinged his gut. “I’m not saying anything other than people aren’t always what they seem.”

“Really?” The accusation in her voice smothered him. “You mean guys who pretend they’re someone else? You mean those people?”

So, she wanted to play that game? “Yeah, and women, too, the ones who act like they come from money and wish they didn’t. You know the kind. Desperate, on the hunt, pretending they don’t want or need the money or the status… The perfect play to get an unsuspecting sucker to buy.” Buy? He’d bought it all, from the tears, the sadness, the forlorn looks that said she just wanted to belong somewhere. Yup, he’d been the idiot to offer refuge—his heart, his life, his future—and she’d torched them all.

She fisted her hands on the counter, sucked in three deep breaths, blew them out nice and slow. He bet her yoga instructor would approve. “We can’t change the past, or how we’re tied together, no matter how much we wish we could.”
